Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will continue as president of Brazil after defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff election. The Superior Electoral Court reported that Lula received 51.78 percent of valid votes, while his challenger captured 48.22 percent. These figures were confirmed late on Sunday night, finalizing a race that ended in a first for modern Brazilian history.
The voting process faced disruptions across the country due to heavy rain and technical issues. Polls originally scheduled to close at 7 p.m. local time remained open for two extra hours. The Supreme Court approved the extension, a move both campaigns reportedly requested to accommodate voters affected by downpours and transport problems.
Flavio Bolsonaro rejected the outcome, citing the late addition to the voting window. He stated that his legal team would seek to annul the elections. "I will not accept that the rules of the game have been arbitrarily changed, once again, by Lula's friends on the Federal Supreme Court," Bolsonaro said. His claim contrasts with reports that his own side also asked for the extra time.
Lula becomes the first candidate in Brazil's recent history to lose the initial round of voting and then win the subsequent runoff. His victory runs counter to a regional trend where conservative governments have taken power in other Latin American nations. He is scheduled to begin his new term on January 5, 2027.
During his post-election remarks, Lula emphasized national independence and domestic priorities. "In this election, we defeated the interference that was coming from the outside in," he told supporters. "Brazil is no one's back yard." He also pledged to dedicate himself 24 hours a day to serving the country.
The result drew congratulations from international figures, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, United States Senator Bernie Sanders, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Lula's political platform focuses on poverty reduction, social spending, and environmental protection, alongside stronger ties with China and Iran.
The election concludes a campaign where Lula defended his record on emerging economy cooperation and sovereignty. His win secures a fourth non-consecutive term in office, a milestone in his long political career.
