A loud explosion woke up residents in Buena Park on Saturday night shortly before 10:30 p.m. The blast occurred in the Dolly Place neighborhood, according to the Buena Park Police Department. The sound was so intense that several neighbors thought they were hearing gunshots.
Alicia Saldivar, a local resident, said the noise was too loud for her. She stated that the explosion woke her up and frightened her. Other residents stepped outside to see what was happening and found fireworks exploding continuously. Alfredo Lopez, another resident, recalled the moment the noise started. He said he initially thought it was a rocket, but the explosions kept coming until things began to burn.
Orange County firefighters confirmed that they found a box of fireworks on fire. The box appeared to be burning from residual fire of explosives that had already detonated. Buena Park law prohibits the possession or use of illegal fireworks on a property. Fines for these violations range from $1,000 to more than $3,000, depending on previous citations. Owners, tenants, or organizers of the display can face fines of up to $6,000.
The Buena Park Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident. The department has not yet confirmed who was behind the explosions or if any arrests have been made. Officials have not responded to recent inquiries as of this report.
