Jared Banner is the new general manager of the Baltimore Orioles. The team confirmed the hiring on Tuesday, ending a search for a successor to lead the franchise's baseball operations. Banner pledged to the city that he intends to construct a winning baseball team during his tenure.

The organization had already disclosed Banner's arrival the previous week. On Tuesday, Mike Elias, the president of baseball operations, formally introduced Banner to the media. Elias described Banner as being at the peak of his professional capabilities and well prepared for the role. He stated that the organization is pleased to have secured Banner for this critical position.

Banner previously worked for the Chicago Cubs. He served as their assistant general manager starting in January 2024. Before that, he held the title of vice president for player development from 2022 to 2023. He first joined the Cubs staff in December 2020 as a vice president for special projects. Prior to his time in Chicago, Banner spent 11 years with the Boston Red Sox organization.

During his time with the Red Sox, Banner supported the team as it captured World Series titles in 2018, 2013, and 2007. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the executive director of player development for another organization, where he oversaw the minor league system beginning in December 2018. His background includes extensive experience in both major league front offices and minor league development systems.

Banner said he was content in his role with the Cubs and was not actively seeking a new position. He explained that the opportunity to partner with Elias in Baltimore sparked his interest. After evaluating the city and the team, he described Baltimore as a special place. He noted the franchise has a storied history, an iconic ballpark, and a passionate fan base. He also cited the ownership group's desire to win and the organization's internal talent as key factors in his decision.

Under the new structure, Banner will lead the Orioles' player development, coaching, and performance efforts. He will work alongside Elias on strategy, staffing, and talent acquisition. A news release announcing the change outlined these specific duties. The two executives will collaborate closely on the roster and the broader operational direction of the team.

The Orioles expect this leadership change to stabilize their front office as they look to improve their competitive standing. Banner and Elias have stated their commitment to building a team that the city can take pride in. The new general manager will begin his duties immediately following the announcement.
