U.S. Border Patrol agents seized 51.9 pounds of suspected fentanyl in a stop on Interstate 15 in San Diego County. The seizure occurred during anti-smuggling operations along the freeway earlier this month.
The operation took place near the Mission Road exit in Fallbrook, a community in the northern part of the county. Agents observed a Honda CR-V halted in the middle of the roadway. A K-9 unit alerted handlers to the vehicle, leading to a search of the backseat.
Inside the car, officers found a duffel bag holding 22 bundles of suspected narcotics. Preliminary testing confirmed the presence of fentanyl in the seized material. The bundles weighed approximately 51.9 pounds in total.
Justin De La Torre, the chief patrol agent for the U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector, stated that the drugs posed a serious threat to local communities. He noted that the agents remained committed to stopping these substances before they reached neighborhood streets.
De La Torre also emphasized the role of surveillance and professional standards in the capture. He highlighted the importance of partnerships in fighting the trafficking of dangerous narcotics.
The driver was taken to the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station for processing. Agents subsequently transferred both the driver and the seized drugs to the Drug Enforcement Administration for criminal prosecution.
